
I'm looking at getting a pre-IVA MOT check done, just to check over a few things before IVA next Friday
Things that I can't do myself...
brake balance and weld, emissions check, headlamp alignment, and a general once-over.
So - I can drive untaxed and unregistered to the IVA (with insurance), but can I actually drive untaxed and unregistered to an MOT before I've
got IVA?
If not, it's find a trailer time, I guess...
hmm, if its to a garage to fix IVA failure points, yes, but as it won't have failed IVA yet, it hasn't got any failurres to fix, so i don't think so
Yes you can drive to a pre booked MOT. If you're friendly with the garage, ask them not to log it on the computer if poss, otherwise you may get
pestered into annual MOTs for the first 3 years.
You can take it to a garage to have something adjusted in order to pass IVA (os SVA in my case) I drove 20 mile round trip to have the headlights

I spent ages looking at this before my SVA.
The rules are clear.
You can drive to IVA and to have remeidial work done if you fail IVA (assuming inspector doesn't say car is unsafe)
You can't drive anywhere else.

The exemption is that you can drive the vehicle to a test 'required for the purpose of licensingthe vehicle'. Since an MOT is not required,
you cannot legally drive without tax.
Vehicle Excise and Registration Act:

Well, that looks pretty straight-forward. It's the quote from the regulations I was looking for.
Trailer it is.
It's not a compulsory test (as MOT is not required before IVA) so the short answer is, no.
If you do go for a test ask them to go through it as if it is an MOT but not to do any of the paper work/log it on the computer. Once on the MOT
system it needs a test every year (not just after the first 3). An MOT won't show a lot of IVA fail points. The testers aren't trained for
that. The brake test is not the same as done at IVA.

im going to risk driving mine to the MOT test centre to get it all checked over.
Hopefully the pigs wont catch me as I quickly drive the whole 20 yards 
I wouldnt have it done unless the garage will do it without going on the computer, Once your on there you will have to do it every year and wont get
the 3 years grace.
As said the MOT will cover different points to the IVA so not worth it. Theyl probably let you stick it on the rollers and smoke test if theyr not
busy for an hours labour mind you.
bear in mind they won't be able to put it on the system as it won't have a chassis number or registration number, so don't worry about that. but it will have to be trailered or on a recovery truck

I've booked it in for a 'pre-MOT check' on Friday, and the guy says he'll check out the brakes on the rollers to ensure the
balance still meets the rear brake efficiency requirements - which was my main concern, really. Can also tweak headlamp aim and check emissions,
too.
The garage I found does some motorsport prep work, so are a bit more understanding of the quirks of kit cars and the like. Better still, they're
going to trailer it there and back for me!
