Wiring of fog lamp
givemethebighammer - 14/7/04 at 03:29 PM

I'm a little confused over this one. People on this (and other forums) report that the SVA regulation states that the fog lamp must only operate when the vehicles lights are on. However after calling the SVA technical desk it would appear that the only regulation states that whenever the fog lamp is on, a dash warning lamp must be illuminated and be clearly visible to the driver. I know it's only another relay to add to stop the fog lamp working without the lights on, but I really don't want to be adding wiring for the sake of it. Especially when I am never likely to ever need the fog lamp anyway.

so peeps what's the lowdown or is this just another interpretation of the SVA manual ?

The SVA people are correct the book states as you quoted. I remember showing my tester that it only worked when dipped beam was on. He remarked that whilst all very good it could work indipendantly as long as there was a warning light, so much for all my wiring

SVA only requires a warning light but MOT requies the fog light to only work on dip beam...

Ah, getting the MOT and SVA regs mixed up again. Surely you would think that they would be the same ?

Think about it.. a manufacturer produces a car with a fog light wired independently of the other lights. Passes type approval and sells the car.. then in three years all his cars fail their MOT tests ????

just doesn't make sense.

I guess I'll do the modification anyway, saves doing it later or removing the fog lamp before the MOT...

thanks
