Now before I get started I am not talking about putting a chassis plate off an old kit on a newly built one.


If I bought an old Dutton (as an example it could just as easily be a striker or westfield) and just refurbished it but decided not to use the body work and either put a body of my own design or another ie Fury, would I then be required to go to the DVLA to get it inspected with a V627/1 Built up vehiclei nspection report?

If my thinking is correct I would then get another age related plate and possibly a new chassis number?

Would it also be correct that I could then give the car any name I wanted?

Is using a kit car as a base the same as using for example an MR2 for a Ferrari replica?


I don't intend to alter the chassis and just refurbish everything as is using the original engine etc.

As long as the chassis is left alone then your fine, you could put an ice cream van body on it and you would be fine

edit: you wont need to get inspected or anything BECAUSE you have NOT changed any of the chassis

Agreed - it still needs to be safe though i.e. pass an MOT test - lights in accordance with Construction and Use regs etc.

With the MK re-body does anyone have any pics of where the body fixes to the frame, does it use out riggers of some sort to support the body?

Yes as above 100% legal as long as no major changes to chassiss, however I would steer clear of Duttons for a couple of reasons first of all the chassis design is "somewhat" crude and secondly the Dutton owners club seems to have a mission pursue anything advertised as a Dutton that dosen't look like a Dutton as a ringer.

While most such cars advertised are actually ringers, incorrectly registered MK, tiger or other chassiss running illegally under Dutton log books, this is not the case with what you propose but I suspect that won't stop the Dutton zealots trying throw bureaucratic obstacles in your path.
