What do the masses think the word 'security' means when read in this context of the MSVA guide (bike / trike IVA)...

8. Check fuel filler caps for;
a) presence
b) security
c) and to ensure that when closed they form a positive seal which does not allow fuel to leak.

Do they mean lockable or just capable of being securely fastened (as in screw-top, or similar).

The 'reason for failure' only says 'not positively secured'.

Fuel caps on cars need to have an attaching wire/chain or similar, so you can't leave the thing at the pumps.

Maybe similar for bikes and trikes.

What's your thought on the 'lockable' aspect? For me the wording is too vague to indicate one way or the other.

when i took my car for iva at end of august i was told by the examiner that if when unlocked and removed the key doesnt come out of cap then it doesnt need tethering as it is thought that your fuel cap key is attatched to your ignition key so you cant forget to put cap back on.

I would have interpreted it as meaning that its a good fit and not going to fall out/off etc

just went through my files and all 3 MSVA tests I had, the bike fuel tank caps, had the capability to be locked, so I dont know if that was the security issue??

however I was never asked to demonstrate if the cap locked or not??

easiest way is to ring the test centre and ask, my local tester is a star and more than happy to answer questions
