I'm building a Midlana-ish middy using the wheels hubs, uprights, brakes and rack from a mk1 mx5. The engine and trans is from my old 02 MG zr 160.

I would like to avoid having Q plate if possible (I have a reason). So my understanding is that with an amateur built chassis I might get an age related with the engine and trans from the MG. Is that right?

The terminology on the DVLA website states that the chassis must be from a specialist manufacturer, I know folks have had age related plates with home built chassis. Is my chassis likely to be the problem here???

A trick I've seen is to get the MX-5 V5 updated with a new engine (in this case, the MG engine), then the Mazda/MG mutant is the single donor vehicle for the purposes of the age-related plate. Engine and gearbox are major parts, so I suspect they score very highly in the DVLA age determination algorithms.

As DVLA no longer inspect the cars prior to reguistration (relying on IVA to check the engine/chassis numbers) how would they know what the rest of the bits came from... other than the form you fill in?
