Just been to see a new build Cobra, it's got a TVR engine fitted, and a brand new Hawk body and chassis etc. On the log book it says TVR Hawk, but hasn't been SVA'd or IVA'd. My question is is this legal.

Is the chassis changed in design from the original TVR?

When was it first registered?
If it's before SVA was introduced then it is probably OK.
If it is a brand new build then, as you say, it must be subject to IVA.
What description comes up when you do a DVLA search using the reg number?

what you mean with "new built"? it was built recently..or was it built e.g. 1990 but never used, hence it looks like new?

it was built recently, they have used the v5 of the tvr but changed the chassis number to the hawk one . now on the v5 it is called a TVR-HAWK

Then iIMHO walk away and leave well alone!
If it had been registered correctly, then it will have gone through IVA possibly using the TVR as a donor and would be registered as a Hawk for the manufacturer and probably as a '289' or '427' for the model (depending on what Cobra body it is replicating)

illegal what they have done!!

the only way you can re-use the original identity is by using the original, un-modified, chassis with putting a new body on top.

like sammio or ribble has done it with herald or spit chassis

as the car mentioned has used a hawk body, hawk chassis and "only" a tvr engine its not even near to be liable for such a body-conversion.

ringer, illegal, illegal, dodgy paperwork, should be reported to dvla!!!

Sounds dodgy but how has the V5 been changed to tvr hawk??

If you're specifically wanting a Cobra, then if you haven't done so already, join the UK Cobra Club here http://www.cobraclub.com/forum/forum.php
You will find a mine of knowledge on all the Cobra replica kits and what pitfalls to look for (especially when it comes to whether they have been correctly registered or not.) Any Cobra you look at may possibly be known to somebody on there too.
Also, Stoneleigh is coming up next month and there'll be around 250 Cobras there so you would be able to see all the differences between the manufacturers - such as leg room etc.
