Hi guys, anyone know what the law is on towing a half built kit car on a tow pole? If you tow a car (not on trailer) does it need to have current MOT, tax, etc. basically my kit is half built with running gear ready but i want to transport it and dont have a trailer.

any knowledge welcome

If it has any of its wheels on the road, it has to be road legal in all respects (often discussed on this forum!).

Without wanting to open up the usual can of worms that comes with this topic - if your tow the car in such a way that it doesn't need a driver (dolly), has a trailerboard with lights and number plate of towing vehicle, and it's below whatever the weight requirement for brakes is, then surely it's just a rather expensive trailer?

yea, but then weight requirement for brakes is 250kg so that's not gonna work!

Hi,
Here goes, to tow a car on a towpole, it must be road legal, taxed tested and insured.

To tow on an A Frame, it certainly needs to be taxed tested and insured, plus it must be under 750kg (limit for unbraked trailers)

On a dolly the only requirement is that the dolly/car combination is under 750kg. this applies even if the dolly wheels are braked as all wheels contacting the road must be braked.

In reference to the coment earlier re it being just an expensive trailer if its on an A Frame, this doesnt work as I argued exactly the same point in court a couple of years ago re A Framing an engineless Escort van. Three representitives from the DVLA were in court to prove me wrong so its obviously an argument they come accross quite often.

As always, make sure your insurance covers you to tow cars, some policies have a get out clause for them.
