I’m just about to send off the SVA application form. I’ve been checking through the posts on the subject and just wanted to see if I had got it right.


I fill in the form include a cheque and post… (good start what……)

I get insurance for the car, best to get the date first to ensure that the insurance does not laps before the test and registration procedure is complete.

Make a plate with the cars chassis number on it and tape it to the back of the car.

Drive to the test with a support car with all my tools in.

I am planning to write a letter to the DVLA giving details of the car and its chassis number before I go for the SVA, so that I can say if stopped that the DVLA are aware of the car.

Once the sva has been passed I fill out the necessary forms for the DVLA and post those off and then what???

Do I wait for an inspector to contact me or do I contact the local office and talk to them, what’s best?

When I took my car for its SVA last year I did not put the chassis number on the rear of the car.
You don't need to contact the DVLA to make them aware of the car, your SVA application will have done that and you will have an appointment letter to take with you when you go for the test.
Take your insurance cert with you when you go for the Test.
When you have your MAC certificate from the SVA test centre phone or visit your local DVLA office to make an appointment for the car to be inspected. Take all your paperwork when you go. I think some offices come to the owner's home for the inspection.
On the way bck from my SVA test I went to the toilet at a filling station and was told that a policeman head been looking at the car, which obviously had no plates or tax. When I went out to the car he was in the checkout queue and not interested in me or the car. Since the car was packed with tool boxes and it was only 10 miles from the test centre he may well have understood why the car had no plates.

I managed to arrange an inspection at the DVLA straight after the SVA. I should have been able to tax it there and then and get my plate numbers issued, but unfortunately I forgot to take proof of identity with me (passport or similar) so they wouldn't do it.
So if you decide to go in person to speed things up, then don't forget your I.D

Which test centre are you applying for? Chelmsford and Norwich are both good, but CM is easier to find, and has fewer traffic problems.

Otherwise they're equal, and roughly the same distance from you (give or take 10 miles)

chelmsford test center is still closed for another month or so i beleive, thats why i had to go to gillingham for mine last month, hopefully it will be open by the time you need yours tested

In that case I'd suggest nominating Norwich as the first choice.

The A140 is a steady road to take a new car along, rather than zooming along the A12 in the morning rush hour (as I did). Only the Norwich inner ring road is a pain...

Different places play it differently. Some DVLA offices want to inspect before SVA (some also want to tell you what chassis number to use) some do the inspection after. Best decide which office to use then tell them what you're planning on doing. Then they can tell you which particular car-registration dance they like to do!!!

It'll take them two months for them to get the fingers out of their butts so the sooner you do it the better

you have it exactly right, you want to apply to the dvla as soon as poss, but you are then in the tricky situation of having to take out insurance (to get it registered) and hoping it doesn't lapse first (same prob here!!! )


It's a catch 22, but an sva retest should be pretty quick so I'd take out the insurance on the day of your first sva test as a best guess.

I was hoping to go to chelmsford, but you are right the A140 is a gentile road and a little futher so more of a drive in the beast.

just cant wait to get the plates, tax and have some fun, as weel as end the comments from the wife about the pile of scrap in the garage.

Just realised where you live, I have used Norwich twice for SVA on different cars and they were very fair, made suggestions and allow you time to make small fixes while the guy went for his tea break.

Also I found Ipswich DVLA very helpful, call in before the sva with your basic paperwork and see if you can make an appointment for straight after the SVA. I did this on both occassions even though I live north of Ipswich they were quite happy with this. First time I received my registration straight away and the second got the paperwork within a few days

Well lads the paperwork is in the post so fingers crossed

i'm trying to have the sva on a weekend, so i will have to do the dvla another day.

i will have to got to the doctors one day.
