So im going to drive 200 miles on saterday to look at, and potentially buy a new car....

The plan is, that I will migrate my insurance policy from my current car to the new car as its only going to cost me £50 extra...

But...If I buy the car on saterday and phone up Mr insruance to migrate the insurance over...that will leave the old car un-insured...

Can someone who has a fully comp insurance policy drive the old car which now doesnt have an insurance policy of its own?

How do people usually do the picking up of a new car insurance wise?....Im hoping to take my sister with me as my extra driver...but how does the insurance thing work...

It wouldnt bother me, but its such a long drive back, I dont want to loose my shiny new toy hours after paying a small fortune for it...

Any thoughts?

you can't have a car on the road without 3rd party insurance.

If you do what you suggest you will be breaking the law (well your sister will be).

You need to get temporary cover. I think norwich union do it. In fact i think if you buy of ebay you get it automatically!!!!!

Norwich Union offer 7 days free insurance with an HPI check (NU own HPI)

Just do an HPI check which is always a good idea anyway and the jobs a good'un.

I presume you dont have to be insured with NU to take advantege of the free 7 days?

Unforunately its not comming off ebay...

The other option is that I go back and pickup the car at a later date once the old car is safely tucked up at home...but the thought of going all that way by train and having to wait another week for the car doesnt appeal

I guess migrating the insurance policy also means that selling the car will be hard as I wont legally be able to let anyone testdrive the car...

I'd insure the new car for the day just to be on the safe side!

Not used dayinsure myself but don't see it being expensive compared to taking the risk!

Change the vehicle with your insurer and put the old one on as a temporary additional vehicle.

Try here not used 'em myself, but they're a big name and it seems cheap enough for a few days

Have you spoken to your insurance company about this? It can't be the first time this sort of situation has come up and they may be able to insure both cars for the same day? Certainly worth asking.

'Phone you insurance bods and explain what you need. My insurers gave me 14 days free cover for my cars. They even explained that they would insure me before I bought a car in case I pranged it, and then I could cancel it if I didn't buy it!

You can buy monthly from ecarinsurance, only one month is no problem. I have used this for bikes - you get a proper certificate so you can get tax if required. It is instant online.

Deffinately will get onto the insruance company and see what they say..

Would really be usefull to have the policy before I look at the car so I can test drive it safely...but will see what they say

Do what I did, when we were trying to sell one old car and replace with another that we needed to use old car to collect new car, returning both home.

Phone up insurance co, advise what you are doing and they maybe more than happy to cover you for both cars for the day.

both the AA and tesco do a 14 day free overlap when you swap vehicle.

NU were doing 7 days free if you got a quote with them for a car you were buying. Didn't have to take the quote thankfully as they have never been competitive for me.
Don't know if they are still doing it though.

overlap isn't an uncommon thing. When I bought my TVR I hadn't yet sold my FTO - my insurance covered me for a week on both, then charged me by the week/month for "a reasonable period" to sell the FTO.

When I last changed my car I paid about £25 to add the old one as an additional car for one month - fully comp, plenty of time to sell it.

As an alternative for collecting the car, if the person you are buying from has it insured and maintains that cover whilst you drive home and the person driving it is covered for any vehicle you would actually be legal. However, it is unlikely that the seller would be prepared to lose their no claims bonus if the car was stolen so that is a risk you would have to take yourself.
