Can you use Black/White Plates on a Q reg car ?

They are legal for Pre 1973 cars and I thought Q reg was classed as 1 st January 1971.

i don't know for sure, but i owuld think the 1971 thing just relates to MOT standards and the like. the cars first date of registration on the v5 will still be what ever year you register it in, and i guess thats what depends on if you are allowed to have a black and white plate

Doubt very much if you would get away with black/white plates. MOT standards for plates are changing in the very near future. ALL plates on vehicles registered since I think 2001 will have to have BS number, suppliers name and postcode . Nothing else . Any of the plates supplied at shows etc MAY not be compliant

The silver on black plates are only for cars registered before 1973. Whatever your reg (Q, pre-73 age-related or more recent) your car will first have been registered more recently, therefore doesn't qualify (except for e.g. pre-73 LWB beach buggies which use an original unmodified Beetle chassis).

The MOT treats Q plated cars as if they were pre-73 (or whatever the date is) for emissions purposes

Yup. Fraid they won't accept them- date of registration is the critical thing here. Otherwise you could say your Q plate car was historic and not have to pay road tax!!!
