Searching the forum I know this has been done to death but I still could do with knowing the pros and cons of registration

I am half way through building a spec R Indy with a new (ish) 2007 ZX10R and mostly new/reconditioned parts. Do I

1) Cobble together new (ish) receipts
2) Get an age related V5 from MK
3) Q plate?

I'm tempted to try and go the new route as hopefully the car will be worth more and I avoid MOT's for 3 years. Although i don't know the disadvantages

You wont need an MOT for the first three years on an age related plate either, not 100% sure of q plate

disadvantage i can see of a new plate is that youll need to pass stricter emissions test at MOT.

I doubt whether a new reg will affect the value of the car. I personally would be too fussed about donar age/q/new reg of a kitcar i was going to look at with a view to buying as you can tell from the V5 when it was first registered (as a kitcar) and if its been put together poorly i wouldnt buy it whether its got a 57 plate on or B/Q plate.

Emissions will need to pass the SVA at whatever standard it is for the Engine / year.
However, on MoT's you only get a Visual test, as no year info is available.

However, My V5 has the emissions test info on it. But I never take my V5 out the cupboard, let alone to a MoT testing station.

Tester was happy doing a visual test, and that was a place I have never used before ie I was a stranger to them.

Its shouldnt be a problem, as most of us dont put knackered smoking engines in our beloved cars.

Advantage of a New Reg is you 3 years of no mot. However, you need to have reciepts for ALL new components and ONE refurb'd one which is usually the engine.
Up side is you can put a personal plate on it,
which you cant on a Q plate.

Mines a Q plate. its not a problem for me.

Of course if you have the donor v5, and reciepts, you can have an age related plate.

Just my observations..

But having taken a Q plate through several MOT's I would actively look for one if buying a new -to me- car..

Last 2 MOT's I've done with my Striker we've ended up standing around for 20 minutes, waiting for the allotted time to be up, so he can print the pass form..

Visable smoke only, no fog / reversing lights required etc etc Basically comes down to a simple 'is it safe' and seemingly avoids all the rubbish that everybody seems to try and work around anyway?

You won't get a new reg unless everything on the car is new apart from one part. As the engine/gearbox is SH that immediately eliminates a new reg. IIRC a new chassis scores you 5 points & you need either 7 or 8 (can't remember, no doubt someone will confirm) you then need to score the other 2 (or 3) points all from one donor & you will get a plate age related to that donor. If you have a "Bitsa" combination you'll get a "Q". As I understand it no matter what reg you don't need an MoT for 3 years, but if you get an MoT off your own back your vehicle will then be in the system & will require MoT's each year. The "Q" reg means that irrelevant of how it was tested for SVA & what is on your V5, for MoT it will be tested for visible smoke only.

i have a q plate, and i've noticed that when i'm driving the car i cant see it so it dosnt bother me.

Having a Q plate doesn't effect the driving quality, it doesn't make the car goes faster.... etc etc..

Infact, having a Q plate means you don't have to faff about trying to get the car to scrape through the lambda / emissions test @ MOT and you can spend the time doing something more interesting like driving!! Just turn up and unless the car is fundamentally unsafe or smoking you're fine!!!

Q-plate does not affect the speed or handling of a car but what about insurancE?

Just got my renwal from A Flux (one year has zipped by!!?! ) and there is on the form question:

Is it Q reg? (pointless really since the reg is already on the parper work.
and
What makes is Q reg?

I guess there are asking for a reason, read excuse to hike price up a bit more.

It would be interesting to know if Q reg makes it more expensive (or chepear)?

I'm planning for a Q reg personally.

For insurance I believe tin-tops with Q reg are often loaded, but kitcars are treated as individual - I don't believe a specialist kit insurer will penalise a Q.

My advice would be to go for whatever registration you want, be it new, age related or Q. It really depends how much effort you are prepared to put in, to get what you want.

None of the registrations you've mentioned are particularly difficult to obtain and you'll find future MOT's aren't a problem, regardless of your registration.
