Some of you will be well aware that there is always an issue when trying to tax kitcars due to the fact that often it asks for an MOT even though the car is less than three years old.

When this happened to me and I spoke to the DVLA they told me to fill in form V112 and take it with my insurance and tax renewal form to the post office.

The post office accepted it no probs when I explained that the DVLA had told me that I would be able to tax it as long as I filled in the form V112.

I am just about to tax it again and am going to do the same, I also noticed that the form has been ammended slightly to specifically state excemption for less than three years old where you actually state the date of manufacture (in my case 2005).

I was shocked when i was allowed to renew mine online this week. There must be a hidden code on the logbook that Swansea use to state no MOT needed. Mine was sent back 6 months after first registration courtesy of local DVLA office.

Which section of Page 2 did you choose? None of those seem compatible to kit cars?

Hi, I think that this will come in useful.

Just got my tax renewal through this morning and they claim I need an MOT. My MK was only registered last year on a Q plate so we'll see if this does the trick.

There's nothing hidden about it - it's the bit that states the 'date of first registration'. If that's less than three years ago then no MOT required, simple as that (doesn't make any difference if it's Q, age-related, or new plate).

Whether that's really sensible or not in the spirit of the 'new cars don't require MOT for three years' rule is a different matter, but it makes life a lot easier for us kit-car builders.

Lat time I got one of those reminders with "MOT certificate" in the requirements I went down to the local DVLA office in Ipswich. Talked to the bloke, who went off and talked to an inspector, and 5 minutes later I was told that the requirement was wrong and that I'd be sent a disc in the post. No fuss, and it arrived a couple of days later. If I'd taken a copy of the MAC certificate with me I could have had it on the spot - no idea why, but I wasn't going to argue as I was ahead on points at the time!
