my gear lever is a length of 16mm tube with a flat washer welded on top

I would say it depends on the radius where you have welded the flat washer on top.

the tube is 14mm i.d. so ive welded a 14mm by 5mm thick washer in the end . i may be able to put this tube into a lathe and add a radius

I know someone who failed because he had one of those cylindrical alloy knobs. So I would be skeptical.

ill have a scout round for a gear knob and put a gaiter on.
