Sierra uprights – mushroom inserts - SVA
Paul (Notts) - 11/12/07 at 04:54 PM

I have sierra uprights on the front with the top wishbone connected to a Mushroom insert that is held in place by a pinch bolt.

Do I need to drill through the upright and mushroom insert and place a bolt through for the SVA or is the above setup sufficient

If I've understood your post correctly then the Pinch bolt is sufficient.

i have heard conflicting info on this...

i have heard that you need a pinch bolt...

I've heard that you do need the extra bolt - I just drilled and tapped an M6 thread

Although I can't provide an answer.

I have given this matter some thought as part of my Roadster project.

Unlike the original Sierra mcpherson strut, the musroom adapter does not have a locating lug.
On the original Sierra strut the locating lug also doubles up as a secondary failsafe. The strut cannot be pulled from the hub assembly whilst the bolt remains intact.

Obviously this is not the case with the musroom adapter. If the pinch bolt became loose ( however unlikely this may be ). The adapter will then be free to be pulled out.

My own view is, it would be a sound engineering practice to provide some means of failsafe.

As others have stated. The easiest way to do this is with a secondary bolt through the casting & tapped into the adaptor.

Hi Paul

I got through the SVA at Notts with just the pinch bolts. I have been informed though at some test centers you will need to drill and bolt the mushrooms in the uprights too...

For the 30mins it will take you to do the job of putting an M6-M8 bolt through the uprights in to the mushrooms why risk failing the IVA if thats the only thing it fails on?

Not sure if its Jesus or Lazarus, but either way, its a resurrection.

As with all things IVA, if in doubt, just do it! If it looks 50/50 why take the gamble?
