Quick question - chassis number

Just about to punch the cahssis number .

Is 4mm OK for the letter size?

According to my SVA man there is no requirement for digit size. They just have to be indellible, legible and match all the paperwork!

NO! 5mm minimum! also make sure you have enough digits!

I stamped into 3mm plate anything less if unsupported distorts. If you are doing a weld in plate leave a good big margin so you dont burn or distort the digits!

Hi Paul,

I think we used 10mm stamps.

We stamped the number twice, once onto an aluminium strip riveted to one of the chassis rails next to the engine and once directly into the chassis on one of the cross members under the drivers seat.

Use bigger, if you ever would like to sell or take your car abroad. Most countries require 7mm, so 10mm is a safe size. Also don't weld in a plate as it sometimes rizes suspision regarding stolen/false registration. Probably not in the UK having a Q plate, but Q plates only exist in the UK by my knowledge

I had to weld mine in. Local DVLA were most insistent on that.

There cannot be any misinterpretation about this as the SVA manual is concise about this.

Err, yes there is. Have a closer read, and you find that it only applies to goods vehicles!

Heading for SVA in the next month or so...

Is Mr SVA likely to be happy with an aluminium plate (two off?) fixed to the chassis with 4.8mm pop rivets?
I have a 5mm punch set from CBS.
Not yet decided on VIN.
