hi all. just got back from dvla to enquire about my vin number as i need to send my forms off for sva! spoke to a bloke, and asked him if my chassis
number would be ok. he seemed to think that i needed to be issued one by the dvla, i said that i have been told i would be able to make up my. anyway,
he was having none of it, so he then went off to ring someone. he came back to say i could make up my own if i was building a new kit! and having a
new reg!! i told him i was going for a Q because i dont have a single donor and he said there would be no way i could be allowed my own VIN.
So is there anyone on this SITE that has a made up chassis number on a Q plate???
please help someone please

Yes and had a nightmare registering it.
Is it worth the hassel ?
Me - yes I have a very personal Vin number

edit - there is a thread with a letter from the DVLA on it that explains the rules. You need to find it and go back again.

how did you win in the end? the guy i spoke to seemed hell bent that i would no way on earth get my own accepted
Yes - homegrown VIN number + Q plate. As you will see in numerous places, each local DVLA office is a law unto itself. My approach was to contact the
office I intended to use and get them to confirm the VIN I wanted to use was OK. IMHO it's not worth the hassle of fighting it if they insist on
issuing one rather than letting you invent your own. After all, it's not the first thing that people are going to see when they drool at your
car, is it?
true but i would like my vin to relate to my car, sad i know but it makes sense instead of having one that means nothing at all to the car. this is
really starting to wee me off now!!

I sent my VIN off to the local office, they replied saying it was OK but would prefer me to use another DVLA!! How mads that??
Ask them this "If I import a Jap car, will I have to change the Vin?"
There answer should be, "only if it already exists".
There is no difference in accepting an existing foreign vin to you creating one as long as no other vechile has the number.
The guy is talking out of his jacksy, so ask him to show you the specific regulation.
Normally shuts them up!
has anyone in south wales used swansea dvla? and spoken to a bloke called Mike? he said he was the welsh inspection officer!! this has really upset me
as was set on that particular VIN!
is it worth another attempt or will that just wee him off?!?
See this thread

ye seen that paul, only trouble with that letter is its dated a while back and the "officer in question" will probably say "its changed
since then lad" is there anyone i can phone?
rob
nitram did you make your own vin up?
Top tip - don't go near Swansea DVLA at any cost. Go to Cardiff - they are ace there.
From one who knows........

When they demanded an
MOT immediately after SVA I asked them to show me a list of MOT criteria that are not already covered in the hefty SVA manual. Turned out I
didn't need an MOT after all
Working horn, what do I win?

Minimum tread on tyres? Do I get second place?

Made up my own VIN and registered at swansea DVLA office on a Q when I built my Striker back in 2003.
Trouble is they've reduced the dole queues by employing more boneheads to push the mountain of red tape around the civil servants office
emporium.
This country drives me nuts

I was told I couldn't make up my own VIN so I did anyway! After SVA I had and argument about needing an MOT, you don't, an argument about
the length of my VIN so changed it by adding zeros, an argument about the legibility of the VIN plate, solved by showing it to another inspector from
the same office and eventually after 5 weeks got a Q plate. worst bit of the build by far!

i agree with you clanger this country has gone mad! think i will give cardiff a ring and see what they say, if they say i aint allowed my own vin then
im stuffed and will have to settle with a dvla one!! which i dont really want!!
wish me luck, and thanks for the input guys,
