Grrrrr. just tried to phone the DVAL to ask them what the first step is....
dvla : "is this a new car, or a conversion?"
me : "well its a brand new chassis, with transmission bits from another car"
dvla : "so its a kit-conversion?"
me : "you tell me!"
dvla : "ok, well you will need ot fill out a V55, and insure it"
me : "how can i insure it, i dont have any number plates yet "
dvla : "you can use the chassis number"
me : "i dont have one as its a brand new kit car"
dvla : "what about the chassi number from the old car"
me : "that old car was scraped - its a kit car, its not like i have just cut the room off an old sierra"
dvla : "oh, never come across that before - a kit car you say"
me : "yes, they are very common and i assumed this would be easy"
dvla : "no, as i said, not come across kit cars like that before".
GGGEEEEEZZZZEEE!!!!
ok guys, what do i need to do first?
I have built my kit car, i now want to drive it. what do i do first???
Make up your own chassis number (search on here will reveal how).....
Then you can insure it...and procede..
good luck!
you can insure it on a chassis number.
You need to ask the DVLA or your regional licensing office if they can inspect the car and issue a chassis number.
You can use your own chassis number but I think it's a bit trickier.
Once you have a chassis number, you can then apply for sva
once you have passed sva then you can apply for a reg number using the V55
Cheers
Mark
I cut the chassis plates off my donor and am keeping it on SORN
In an alternative universe…
dvla : "is this a new car, or a conversion?"
You: "what’s the simplest"
dvla : " a kit-conversion?"
You : "ok it’s a kit-conversion"
dvla : "ok, well you will need to fill out a V55, and insure it"
me : "How do I insure it without the registration number"
dvla : "you can use the chassis number"
You : "So I can use the one from the donor?"
dvla : "Yes that is ok"
You : "Just as well I kept the number then…"
dvla : "that’s right it is"
You : "Can I just keep the old registration number too?"
dvla : "Is it a new chassis?”
You : “oh no it’s the Sierra one, I have just changed some minor things”
Dvla : “no problem, just update the registration documents and that will be fine”
You : “can I buy the road tax on-line?
Dvla : “yes no problem with that”
You : “ great thank you, Bye”
Dvla : “Bye, what a nice man…”

Saigonij,
It's taken you 900 posts to find that out?
Cheers,
James
wow, have i really done 970 posts!!!!!
( shop access here i come ??? )
I made up a chassis number and sent it to my local DVLA and got a nice letter back saying it was OK.
Stamped the number on the chassis and on the floor went to SVA, came away with a MAC, went straight to the DVLA office and am now waiitng for the new
number.

Its insured on the chassis number.
All in a very pleasant experience, the DVLA office were very good & helpful

I used Stockton DVLA, they have been very helpful and no confusion over what is required.
