Anyone know if stick on front number plates are legal? going on the bonnet of a 1972 car??

not legal and AFAIK never have been despite being seen on many an E-Type *

* hmmm, not so sure about this - seem to recall reading they weren't but in olden times you could buy blanks and stick on letters and make up your own plates so presumably that was legal.


NOTE: I did not say not to fit one, just that they are not legal, whcih after all was your question. I have one on my nose cone; providing it is correctly sized and spaced, you'll probably not be troubled.

I've got a stick on on my Westfield been there for years and no problems!

i don't think they're legal... but there's plenty of people (on here lol) who didn't seem to fit one at all...

think is though, i've seen plenty of new cars which have a blank plate, with a vinyl number plate sticker stuck on from the factory/dealer you see when the cars about 2 years old the number plate's all rippled... so how do you draw the line?

Just like those silver on a black background plates,technicaly stick on pates are illegal. Should you get pulled over by PC plod and you don't give him lip, 10 times out of ten he won't even notice!

I got nicked in my past mad fuel days for a sticky on a mini bonnet. Old bill actually got a ruler out and remarked the plate should be a flat surface, but then he was a twat.

From the MOT Testers Manual...

Vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973 may have registration plates displaying white, grey or silver characters on a black background.

And

On Vehicles first Registered on or after 1 January 1973, Check
. the colour of the characters and background
. that the registration plates are fixed vertically, or as close to vertical as is reasonably practical

Can't see the problem really. As long as the size and spacing is correct where's the harm?

Never had a problem with mine, (see avatar) perhaps i'm just lucky.

I've got a sticky plate on my car, bought from my local car accessory shop. I'ts reflective white. full size letters and trimmed to look right. All the shop wanted was the letter from DVLA confirming the reg.
I think it's a very grey area with the law, but from biking experience all the coppers will usually do is give you a notice to put a 'legal' plate on and take it to a MOT station to be approved.
From what I've seen of most cars a sticky one above the radiator looks far better.
