Snow Chains. Legal?
Hiya all.
Heard something on the radio today and i'm not sure i beleive it.
They said "snow chains are not legal for use on the roads in the uk as they damage the road surface"
Can anyone confirm this? I find it hard to beleive since in many EU countries they are manditory.
Who the f**K tightened this up!

AFAIK they are legal providing there is a certain depth of snow.
I think it is illegal to use them when there is no / too little snow.

I was under the impression that we are not allowed to use snow chains in the UK

According to the AA LINKY they are permitted, and as the guide
is not pre-fixed with a (2) it would suggest to me that they are not restricted to emergency use only?? All countries are pre-fixed with a (5) at the
top of teh chart which suggests ample snow coverage to avoid road damage. That's how I read it anyway. I can't see anything suggesting
they are illegal anywhere, they're not mentioned at all in the Road Traffic Act.

In Norway it is a legal requiremnt to have 2 sets of wheels for your car. I set with studded tyres, 1 set without. On a specific day of the year
everyone is required to fit studded tyres and after that date roads are not cleared of snow or salted and gritted. obviously everyone changes back on
a specific day in the spring and then roads are cleared.

Too true, although one of our sites is at 2600 metres and we do get a fair bit of hail and rain in November !!
