how do i tell when my donor was last taxed?

I was reminded about sorn for my donor as my brother recently got a fine in the post when he failed to renew his tax.

I have read thorugh old posts on the subject of sorn and it appears that if the car has been off the road from before when sorn was introduced in 1998 then you don't need to complete a sorn declaration. This is actually on the sorn form itself that my other half picked up for me the other day.

The last change of registered keeper (ie keeper before me) was july 98 and i bought the car last year. I've never taxed it and never had a reminder or fine thorugh for it.

Anyone got any ideas how I can check when the car was lasted taxed?

I don't really want to declare it sorn if i can get away with it as otherwise i'll have to do it each year and likely forget and get fined.

Ned.

You could phone up the DVLA and ask what they've got on their computers, I've actually found them pretty helpful in the past, they've even overturned a couple of fines for me!

I should think that if you have it registered to you there would have been a fine through the post by now if it needed to be declared SORN but isn't.

SORN is not transferable on ownership, a friend of mine got fined when he bought a car which was declared SORN by the previous owner because he didn't declare it himself when he got it.

I got a fine after christmas. I wrote them a letter and included my fine.

I pointed out that ever since i'd had the car it had been sorn'd. When they'd sent me a reminder I'd filled in the declaration. I didn't believe i'd had a reminder the last time. I then pointed out to wait 5 months from when the sorn ran out too two days after I could be fined without reminding me to fill the SORN in like previously was not very nice (can't remember my exact words). I then asked them to provide proof that they had tried to remind me. If they could then please cash the cheque which i've had to include so the fine doesn't go up!

They quashed my fine and re-instated my sorn back dated to August.

So the computer system is officially poor and they are offically nice people!

it's funny hearing these stories as when it was on the news etc that they were introducing these fines, they said that they were non appealable. they were obviously talking bollox.

To be fair they've always been really helpful when I've had a problem, not nearly as harsh as those adverts make out!

Can someone clear a point up over the sorn regs. I declared my donor sorn in Nov2003 since then I have used the V5 doc to register my car. Will they have twiged that I dont own the donor any more or will they still have the donor as still off the road.

I would have thought that if you've registered your car with the old v5 then that car no longer exists. you could ring up dvla and ask after it. if they say it still exists tell them it's been scrapped! it shouldn't matter know you're fully registered with your indy.

ive got loads of trouble with the dvla, one car i sold and never filled in the v5 (daft i know) but the tax ran out the other day without me doing the sorn thing, plus another car that is declared sorn but was scrapped long ago, cant remember who by. And my donor still at the wrong address, plus a car i wrote off a few years ago that is now in a field, no sorn/tax and not updated the address in 30 months...

i might write them a long letter confessing my sins and asking them to sort it all out at once!
