Toyo R888 road legal status
I posted this question with the MSA Technical guru

I have various road legal track day tyres mostly made by Toyo and branded 888. These tyres are currently E marked and therefore designated Road Legal
and listed in the MSA approved list for road going classes. These tyres are about to become non E listed unless the manufacturers protestations are
successful.
Questions:
1) Will MSA delist the tyre (I assume so)?
2) Will that mean competitors despite having tyres E marked will no longer be able to compete with them despite the legislation allowing existing
users to remain road legal till the product wears out?
3) What is to stop competitors stock piling E listted tyres to gain an advantage as the replacements are reported to have less grip?

As the tyre you refer to is currently published in list 1B of the current yearbook with no astrix it will continue to be listed for 2015.
I am aware changes in regulation relating to rolling resistance where some tyres may not achieve the new minimum standard. The MSA tyre Panel is
considering this issue at its next meeting in September and will be likely to introduce changes if necessary from 2016 if required.

I recall this new eu reg as far back as 2009 when the labeling regulations were announced, the labels came but allowed dispensation for tyres that
are designated to be used on pre 90s cars, thats how some tyres bypassed it.
Is there anything a foot that is to change this as googling reveals little except the discussions from last time around.

MSA "meeting in September " this year and or the removal of the "E" mark from the tyres whichever happens soonest I assume.

As long as I can still buy 888's or R1R's and the price doesn't rocket then i'll just keep using them on the road. My Mot man
isn't going to bother checking and doubt anyone else will

All the tyres are becoming very hard to get hold off, softer compound r888 you already can't get, a048 expected to finish next year
We race on the kumho v70, great tyre and no issues getting them, I'll check if they are e marked though

The E mark on my tyres are about the size of a 10 pence piece and very visible to an officer of the law. When the E mark goes I doubt they will
continue in manufacture.

I was speaking to a tyre fitter on Friday and he said R1R had been discontinued.

Its already happened with off road tyres, the ones that fell foul of the regs have dissapeared and been replaced. However various sizes of the
favourites became available from a stock pile and were snapped up pretty quick at much inflated prices. That may well happen with these road/race
tyres.

I agree. My thoughts are with using them on the road if they are still manufactured, but without the E mark.

It's already happening, expect all the big changes will be In place within the next 12-18months

Mmm yes I see what you mean. They seem to offer them as a track day tyre so they could just ignore the approvals and declare them not for road use.
Having said that, it may also be in their interest to do a redesign to achieve the E mark?

Finnally found what I think this is about. From nov 2014, tyres with class g rating will not be placed on market. Then class f from 2018.
Looking at the r888, a lot are class F, so wont be effected till 2018. Some stickier compounds are Gs so will be effected. Im sure in 4 years the
clever tyre bods will have worked a wat around it.

I know yoko are replacing the ao48 with ao50 which is under testing at the moment
Id imagine the ao50 complies to new rules and all the manufacturers will be doing the same

R888 and a048 are so popular with track, sprint and fast Road drivers they must sell loads. Also it is the success of the R888 that helps sell their
Road tyres.
Surely they are not going to just hand over superior market domination to people like maxxis.
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!
