Mushroom security
There's a couple of threads that suggest the mushroom should be positively located w.r.t. the upright. The common solution is an M6 bolt+nut
fitted radially to prevent the mushroom lifting out or rotating.
Two questions to ponder:
1. Is it now required (by SVA inspectors) to secure the mushroom more positively than provided by friction alone due to the pinch bolt?
2. Does it have to be a through-bolt? I've assembled everything in that area and don't want to unnecessarily disturb things to drill a
hole in the uprights...and anyway I don't like the idea of drilling a hole in the upright!
I was thinking of a hole in the mushroom only, aligned with the slot in the upright; then a device to engage with said hole and located by the pinch
bolt - think of a 'D' shape with a peg or tab protruding to the left. Hope I've made that clear
I've got some nice 3mm gauge plate and it seems like a reasonable way to go IF it's needed!
Anyone have comments, observations on this?

The origional sierra strut didnt have a locating bolt....
I did not have any issues at SVA with just a friction fit using the pinch bolt....
(Unless the pinch bolt comes right out and the upright gets seriously distroted, the mushroom is not comming out of its own accord!)...
Having said that, some SVA inspectors like to see it loated inplace.....I guess it depends who you get and wether they know what they are doing!

I put an M6 bolt in mine as I got the impression that this rule varies from SVA station to SVA station (Local interpretation).
While the Sierra did not have an extra bolt, there was a tab from the stut that went round the original pinch bolt for security. In addition the
forces through the Sierra Suspension and the double wishbone set up are also different.

Thanks for your observations.
The matter seems to have been raised since 2006 so I infer it's been a change in the inspection criteria since then. It is a little concerning
if there is inconsistency between SVA centres - you'd think that a requirement (or not) for some feature would be couched in unambiguous
terms!
I appreciate that the forces acting on the mushroom are very different as compared to the strut (i.e. there's about 300 kg upwards with the
strut whereas the mushroom only has to swing the upper w/bone)
On reflection, I think I will make a couple of tab-type plates, if only to show willing. I still don't like the idea of altering the upright by
drilling it!
So it's out with the hacksaw and files this afternoon!

I drilled a 7mm hole through the upright and mushroom and tapped it out to M8 then just screwed a bolt in that was long enough to go through the
mushroom. SVA man checked it was right through and said it looked good.
