Chassis Number Paperwork

On the form I got from DVLA with my chassis number on, it says to get a garage to stamp the number to the chassis on the offside and then get the garage to sign the form.
Being as I built the car, I stamped the plate and welded it so can I sign the form?
Would the DVLA even contact a garage if I get one to sign for it?
Just wondered what others have done?

Yeah I thought about that but I'm not that friendly with the local garage. I only see him once a year for MOT.
Any mechanics here want to sign it for me if I send them some photo's of the job?

Exactly the same point I was at yesterday. I doubt whether many garages even have a set of stamps. I stamped it myself and intend to ask my local guy to fill in the paper work (supplied by dvla). I do know him quite well so hope it's not a probem. Ask your local guy the worst he can say is no. provide the pics and offer to pay a tenner. Easy money for a sig and stamp.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

sorry but can you confirm. If you presnet a car to DVLA with a chassis number already stamped you then need to get a form stamped by a garage to say it was sone by them rather than by you the builder?

I thought they just checked to see it had a chassis stamp. As I'm hopefully rapidly approaching this point of the build I'd appreciate any info.

Cheers
Nigel

Yeah that's about it. The letter says:

There is a legal requirement under the Road Vehicle (construction and use) Regulations Act 1986 that the vehicle idntification number of every vehicle to which this regulation applies shall be marked on the body of the vehicle and on a plate attached to it. The number should be stamped / embossed on the off side of the vehicle, in a clearly visible and accessible position and by a method such as hammering or stamping so it cannot be obliterated. It may also be stamped or embossed onto a plate, which is attached to the vehicle.

Please arrange to have the below chassis number stamped into the vehicle:
SABTVROxxxxxxxxxx

Please arrange through a franchised dealer or local garage for this number to be stamped into your vehicle.

It is in your own interest that you comply with this legal requirement, to enable you to obtain an MOT.

To facilitate registration it is necessary for the garage/dealer to confirm that the chassis number SABTVROxxxxxxxxxx has been stamped or permanently embossed on the vehicle. Please ensure this letter is authorised below by the garage and returned to the Vehicle Registration Office

REGISTRATION WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL THE AGENCY RECEIVE THIS CONFIRMATION.

thing is Chester DVLA insist on inspecting every kit car without fail to check the VIN and engine number so they'll see it's stamped.

so am I right that this only applies to the lucky sods who live where DVLA don't insist on a vehicle inspection?

So far DVLA in initial correspondence and then VOSA on SVA have not mentioned the origin of the chassis number.
I stamped it onto a mild steel plate, spot-welded it to the top chassis rail and then painted it.
VOSA were OK on SVA.
Filling in the registration forms yesterday with the local DVLA office they didn't mention the chassis number at all.
Presumably that will all be covered by their inspecting officer a week on Tuesday who will ensure it's permanently fixed.
Cheers, Pewe

No, DVLA still want to do their inspection as well from what I gather from speaking to some of the others at DVLA. I'm just waiting to double check with the actual inspector. Keep missing him because he's always doing inspections!
As for the origin of the number. The inspector said that I could make one up if I liked but to be aware that some prefixes are reserved or else he would make one up, check it and post it within a couple of days, which he did.

Just spoke to DVLA inspector and he says that it's fine to sign the declaration myself as having stamped it on.
Still needs DVLA inspection though.
