Engine Swap = MOT Or SVA?
Hi all,
As I'm only swapping out the engine and transmission, does my car only need an MOT or the full monty? The shell, brakes and suspension are all
unchanged and all of the interior. Added is a clutch pedal, manual transmission and or course a four pot engine!
Ant advice please?

Just notify DVLA of the engine change. They may require written proof though if it qualifys for lower VED, which in the case of a Smart, is highly
unlikely.

You probably don't need any testing from a legal point of view just for changing the engine.
I would be a bit worried that the new motor won't pass the emissions test when the usual MOT time comes around.

edit - the emissions might be stricter as the smart is a newer car than your donor was

a simplified rule is that if the floor plan has changed you need sva. Assuming its just a new engine in the same location, you are ok IMHO. Moving the
engine front to back or vise versa probably should be sva'd. It comes down to your understanding of 'radically altered', im sure the
regs must give some guide as to what counts as what.

You don't need anything, MOT or SVA, just notify DVLA by sending the V5 back with the new engine number.
Don't worry about the emissions either, the MOT Testers' manual says a vehicle with a replacement engine should be tested on the basis of
the age of the engine (if older), not the vehicle.

Thanks for the help guys. Insurance quoted already and the car is SORN and MOT ran out over a year ago, so will need a ticket. Will inform the
DVLA.
