Will this steering wheel be ok for IVA?
A couple of days ago somebody failed SVA because of the steering wheel. The SVA man said that they wanted the ford steering wheel from the donor.
So idealy, i would like to have this one. Would it be ok as it is not 100% paded?

im pretty sure that would fail due to the exposed metal going from the wheel part to the padded centre, IIRC the entire wheel needs to be padded

That is what i am thinking as well. I guess it will be one of those things that will be changed after IVA.

just get some foam and wrap it around the metal and duct tape it on, think you could get away with that.

what upper column are you using?
I bought an mk 2 escort wheel the other day for £4.99. My wheel (mountey) wont pass, as I cant get a collapsable boss for it.
The standard wheel was the easiest option.

Will be using a column of a clio MK1 as i like the top steering wheel for after IVA and also the renault stalks. I hate the ones from the mx5 donor
and also all the ford ones.
I got a deal for a £15 including ignition barel, stalks, cowling, and radiator fan.
Steering rack is from escort Mk2. So some fidling will be required.

In the first post - one reason why SVA test wanted to see the original Ford wheel fitted could be that the car had a Ford steering column fitted. The
'system' would have been type approved on the donor car making it easy for him to pass at the SVA. Iam unsure what the implications are of
fitting a Renault wheel onto a Ford column from a type approval point of view, however presumably if you have a Renault column and can prove the wheel
is also off the same Renault car then i guess it should be OK.
My first reaction to the wheel pictured is that it looks like an aftermarket wheel with Renault centre pad made to fit.
You can use wheels with steel spokes. i did and passed (well at least for SVA anyway). Had to ensure that the spokes had correct radii, no holes and
fitted to a collapsable boss.

I failed SVA on steel spokes like that. He said he wanted something that was permanent and not just rubber edging or bodge tape.
On the hunt for a cheapio sierra wheel just to make sure it goes through fine. He said that's what he wanted so that's what he'll
get.

Hi
Yea I failed the SVA last week for wrong steering wheel
It was perfectly padded ( Not a temp job)
and had a collapsible boss.
But the examiner said it was not type approved wheel on a type approved column.....
It does seem to depend which centre you use though. I used Gillingham.
They said it will not pass unless it has a standard steering wheel from the donor car....

Sorry to take it slightly off topic, but I thought there were only 2 types of Mountney wheels, classic & M series there are bosses for both.

Don't bodge with tape on a steering wheel , it's hyper critical . If you are using a type aproved steering column with matching production
wheel it ought to be ok , but to be on the safe side I would nip to the scrap yard and find a Renault wheel with fully covered spokes . Once the test
is passed you can decorate a circular saw blade with broken glass and mount it 2 inches from your face untill the first MOT but even for MOT so long
as it's vaguely round and bolted on tight any old wheel will pass. good luck
