DVLA offices Info

Due to the wildly varying way each DVLA office does things maybe we should put up a comprehensive list from our experiences.

Oxford:
Accepted Home made chassis no: Yes
Inspection: Bicester every Wednesday morning
Home inspection: Yes but unknown wait time
Inspection before mac: No
MOT: Not needed
Knowledge: Went through all forms with me with no probs
Time: had tax disk and number plate authorization 48 hours after my inspection (collected in person)

In theory a good idea but in reality, it depends who you speak to at your local DVLA and whether they had their leg over the night before.

Glasgow:
Accepted Home made chassis no: No (SABTVRO issued in 2006 - not sure what latest story is)
Inspection: Office, Home or SVA centre (on a Friday) provided paperwork has already been submitted to local office. Contacts Kenny and Derek.
Home inspection: Yes by Appointment (Kenny)
Inspection before mac: Yes (Not me but a friend did)
MOT: Not needed
Knowledge: Filled my own forms in but very helpful
Time: SVA 3rd April, Forms submitted 6th April, Inspection 8th April, Tax 16th April (holiday weekend) and plates 17th April. A friend managed to get inspection done prior to SVA and got his tax on way home from SVA test. Key is to get inspection done in advance of SVA.

HTH,
Craig.

i think its a great idea. Come on NW builders, I have three I can go to and argue they are closest, so your experiences are appriciated.

Home inspection: NO
Inspection before mac: NO
MOT: Not needed
Knowledge: Went through all forms with me with no probs.

Ipswich, Suffolk:

Inspections on Monday at offices only (no home visits).
Sent paperwork in after SVA on Tuesday 31st March, got appointment for Monday 6th April.
No MOT required (MAC certificate used as equivalent).
Age related plate issued no problems.
Paperwork and tax disk arrived on 8th April.

Good efficient office, but you have to do things at their pace. Don't try to rush them!

Ed.

Carlisle DVLA
SVA'd 6th April and handed forms in same day. Couldnt be inspected then as inspector doesnt work a Monday. Phone DVLA Swansea twice last week and Local Office returned calls. Couldnt give any indication of time scale as short staffed and have a lot of registration work on at the moment. First return caller was not very helpful, second better but still of no use. Is there any maximum time for applications to be processed and shouldnt they at the very least acknowledge an application?
SO, dont go to Carlisle DVLA.

Good example of how experiences differ at the same office im afraid. Stockton is fantastic, defo recommended (Kelly), however i had a home inspection, but after SVA had to drop off paperwork (only to save time on postage) and had to wait about 3 days for reg number (given over phone to satisfy insurance requirements) and then paperwork arrived 1 or 2 days after by post so that plates could be made up.

I should say that if the car was largely road legal and just awaiting SVA they woiuldnt have done the home inspection. mine was carried out 6 weeks before SVA on the provisor that it looked like a car but wasnt capable of being driven at that stage. inspection was 3.5 years ago - hence why policy might differ now.

Birmingham

Passed SVA in Birmingham on 23rd first time - not expected. As have no tow bar on either my wife or my car, popped into DVLA across the road to see what they could do as drove to SVA but cannot drive to DVLA inspection. No help - even when explained the extra costs of hiring a car with tow bar and a trailer

Nottingham

Next try - Nottingham - nearest centre to home. Took paperwork on Saturday 25th and put through door to save postage time and guarantee delivery. Even enclosed cash so would not have to wait for cheque to clear. Phone call Tuesday, 28th, offering inspection date of Friday, 8 May. I had hoped could be done with week so could take to Stoneleigh but no such luck. Now to hire a car with tow bar and a trailer for next week. Will update when had inspection on how long takes to get registration through.

Edited: 8 May
Went to DVLA inspection this morning. Spent £80 hiring van with tow bar and trailer to get there. Lady was nice - see post re age related plate. Just have to wait for the paperwork now. So far it has taken two weeks

Manchester:
Accepted Home made chassis no: Yes
Inspection: Chadderton VOSA on Tuesdays.
Home inspection: Never, ever, ever, not on this earth! No way. Not in this dojo!
Inspection before mac: No
MOT: Not needed
Knowledge: None, nowhere! Except for the inspector himself who works part time and no one will give his number out.
Time: Unknown as above inspector forgets to ring me back returning me to stage 1 i.e. "Hurrah I've just passed SVA, now DVLA to struggle with"
