No longer a need to weld bias bar?

Anybody know how to 'find' the most up to date IVA manual? - IanK has a link to the updated manual, (24/5/2010) but it does not download fully. (stops at 2.67 of 2.85meg?)

The interesting bit is, as he says, they have removed the bit about fully welding up the bias bar, and replaced that with "mechanical means eg. lockwiring"

Maybe this could be the first recorded insance of a govt dept appyling some common sense???

I have a copy at work so can't send it you today, but I can confirm the welding has changed to a mechanical form of locking and it mentions lock wiring - I was particularly interested in this bit as I don't weld!.

The paras below, copy and paste direct from the VOSA site. Good to see some common sense being applied at last.

BUT!!! Note 4 now outlaws the use of the old Fiat type hydraulic pressure limiter. Or any adjustable pressure limiter. Unless you can hide it.

So, now all you have to do is tighten a nut up against the pivot assembly, and put a small hole through it with a split pin, or lockwire. Usually, if they say 'lockwire', then that is what they want to see, even if a splipin is better in this case. And lockwire needs a smaller hole, so less weakening of the bar.

Note 6 is new, and implies that if they find the adjustable brake bias reinstated, then they have the power to revoke your IVA Certificate. Interesting. I wonder how long this check will take to reach the MOT test list?


[Note 4: Hydraulic valves that only operate automatically and react to vehicle loading or braking forces are permitted (Load Sensing and Gravity valves) Manually adjusted valves (other than to permit presetting the automatic function of a valve) are not permitted to be fitted even if they are rendered un-adjustable.

Note 5: Bias bars and other mechanical adjusting devices fitted to twin master cylinders must be rendered inoperable by mechanical means
e.g. lockwiring of components.

Note 6: Adjusting front/rear brake bias may invalidate approval and breach Construction and Use requirements. ]

So, you'd have to screw it back and put the split pin back in for the MOT then?
Which if you plan a dash mounted adjusting knob, it would just be case of marking it's position before the MOT, if you have adjusted it for a different set up.

I don't get it. On a road car, once your brake balance is set correctly, why would you need to adjust it? In reality, how many people actually do adjust it, and isn't it potentially dangerous to do so?

Or have I missed something?

but if you take your road legal cars on track days you may well want to be able to play with the bias.

Note 6 is the wording of the sticker you have to put in the car, adjacent to the bias bar, it is required for IVA.

Yep, no problem. Try letting it finish downloading(progress bar on lower right of screen)
before you open it, or save it to desktop using the inbuilt save button top left (the floppy symbol) or I can email you a copy

Nothing in the latest release about a sticker, at least not in the section I'm referring to.

27.
Vehicles fitted with adjustable twin master cylinders that have been rendered inoperable by mechanical means to comply with RS 26 must have a label affixed on the master cylinder or the immediate vicinity with legible text as detailed in note 6.


But also, from the Version Control Notes...

Requirements relating to vehicles fitted with twin master cylinders have been amended and added requirement to label accordingly from 2/08/2010.

Which is strange, as it implies you can mechanically lock the bias bar now, but don't need to label it until August??

I missed that(obviously), right at the end.

With all the stickers needed, the fluid reservoir is going to need to be a 5l size container!
