Next question? 
If you do fit one though, they may examine how good it is (creases on the bends, how well it's fitted, etc.)

No but kinda makes sense to have one and weld it on rather than it be bolted.

Not if you don't intend to roll it! Right now I am looking at building a car for road rather than track and looking to simplify the build as
much as possible for now

Lolocost sell a simple one for £30 ish.

I agree with Pat on this, 7's without roll bars look pants and one that has been bolted on with 8mm rivnuts is just bigger pants

Roll Cage info (For Land Rovers!)
Firstly I have no experience or qualifications in Roll cage design, so my comments should be treated as those of an unqualified layman.
YOU need to check what you do to YOUR vehicle is safe.
The Roll Bar is a Safety Device to help prevent you ploughing the Tarmac with your HEAD.
Please treat its construction and mounting as if your life depended upon it... As this could well turn out to be true (Hopefully not)
If you are going to do a Job, do it properly, and correctly, or dont do it at all.
I know this is NOT Locost related... But there is some VERY useful info on Roll Cage construction and the joints / brackets seat belt mountings
etc..
Its the Association of Land Rover Clubs Website, and their spec / design for a Land Rover..
OK Its not for a Locost... but the principles apply for the construction techniques. There are a lot of pages.. and it gives detailed drawings.
I agree... M8 Rivnuts are NOT an option. The Landy one is possibly overkill for a Locost.. Landys weigh in a 2 tons (ish). But best make it strong
enough!. There is a lot of info on thses pages. Especially if you are designing and welding / mounting your own design etc.
Its worth a read.

I bolted mine on with 8mm bolts and nuts so I could get it chrome plated, does that count as pants?

No, and as such any fitted is not tested at all. Other than for sharp edges. It may be visually checked for strength if your belts are mounted to
it.
There were pictures somewhere of a 7 that had been rolled and the roll bar was only held on with PU and bolts into rivnuts it had survived.
A bolted on bar is highly unlikely to fail (though I woulnt use rivnuts) since the tensile strength of even 8mm grade 8.8 bolts is very high, use four
on each side and there is no chance of them breaking. If the bar is rear braced and bolted at the bottom of the chassis though the braces it wont got
anywhere.
