Box of bits with no V5....

I've been offered a kit car body plus loads of spares but it has no chassis and no V5.
Amonst the boxes of stuff, I discovered the reg plates.
The seller assured me that the vehicle was on the road 5 years ago but couldn't remember what was on the V5. He thought the V5 was with the car but as the car is now sat outside full of water and has been transported several times in boxes, he couldn't find it.
I 'phoned DVLA today and explained the situation and gave them the VRM and it would appear that the VRM is still assigned to the donor car. I thought this would be the end of it as there is no way the car would ever pass the SVA but the DVLA lady said I could get the car reregistered by paying £19 for the V5(via V62) and then £38 for the reregistration. She did say that it may not be eligable for tax free status (as the donor was) but if it got and age related numer, it perhaps would!!
Does this sound right???

There have been other posts on here about cars being incorrectly registered as the donor on the V5, and what you can do about it. From memory, you have to be able to "prove" that the car existed as the kit for some period of time (not sure if it's just back to the introduction of SVA, or longer), e.g. with old MOTs that show "XYZ kit car" and the reg, photos, etc.

In your case, even if you did get that, how about it not having a chassis? Has another car got the chassis (and presumably the identity)? I think it would only potentially be OK if you used another chassis of the same specification as the original, otherwise it could be classed as ringing.

Good luck!

The chassis was cut up and DVLA also told me that a V5 hadn't been issued for over 7 years and wasn't currently 'active'.
I'm not too bother as I have three of these cars and four log books!! The tax free bit was my dangling carrot!

Im pretty sure that the free tax goes out the window when the reg is transfered to a kit car.
