SVA/MOT chassis number??
hi, im nearly ready for the sva now but i have been advised to get it mot'd first. I got in touch with the mot test centre and they say they
cant mot a car with no chassis plate... any ideas about how to get a chassis plate??

Matt,
My advice is don't get it MOTed before it has passed SVA and is registered. If you do it will be on the system and you will need to MOT anually
from the date of first registration instead of on the thrd aniversary of the first registration.
If you can find a friendly Garage they will generally agree to go through the motions of an MOT test without actually recording the information on the
computer. This is what I did with mine.
Regarding the issuing of a chassis number some DVLA offices seem to allow you to make up your own whilst others insist on issuing the VIN number to
you.
I dealt with Manchester DVLA and when I enquired about the VIN Number prior to SVA they sent me an information pack, in this pack was a note that
read...

We have been advised by VPG that applicants who wish to register kit vehicles may use their own VIN numbers or the kit manufacturers VIN numbers.
The Vin Number must be formatted as outlined below:
The VIN Number must be unique to the vehicle concerned and must not deliberately or inadvertantly copy a sequence of letters and numbers already
allocated. If in doubt seek advice from VPG via LOD helpline.
It must be made up of between 9 and 17 digits and must not contain Q,Z, and I

I have no idea who VPG or LOD are, mybe someone else can enlighten us.
I had no problem using my own chassis number.

Just a quickie - you can get an engraver to make you a chassis number plate and weld it to a convenient place - easier than stamping it in
I got mine made in stainless so it stays shiny too

I would concurr, avoid an MOT, some who have had a proper MOT then end up having to have one every year after the SVA, which at ~$50 a go is £150 of
shiney bits or petrol!
Also some SVA! do not insist on a stamped or welded plate and just a rivetted one is acceptable, stamp it when its all fully registered, just in case
the tits change their mind!
On what grounds were you advised?
Get a bunch of locosters round to check it over for you, or post some pics up here and save yer money

Contact your local DVLA office and ask them for their procedure. As has been said they are all different.

I had my chassis number engraved in a piece of brass at Timpsons & just pop riveted it to the chassis had no problems at SVA or when the DVLA
inspected it.

Just make up a chassis number (iirc 19 alpha numerics), cut out a piece of ally and stamp out, popular initials and dates are useful.
Also stamp to chassis in some awkward place that's difficult to find and remove (that was required by my SVA man).
I agree with not getting MOT'd. You may be able to find somewhere that'll do an unofficial (off system) "MOT" for your piece
of mind (checking emmissions (if appropriate), brake test etc)), though you may have to trailer it there.
