Now you see them, now you don't

Thinking about the points that my car may fail SVA on I wondered if you can help me. For instance, if I leave the aeroscreen on the Phoenix and it fails SVA because the man thinks it is too high and should have wipers and demister, can I just take the car home, remove the screen and then re-present it, with him and me both knowing that as soon as it passes the screen will go back on. I know i could remove it first but the mirrors and wiring go through the screen and there would be a lot of wasted effort if it passed. I know there is some doubt about my mirrors to being SVA compliant but I thought I'd go for the test and then rectify afterwards everything he picked up on.

I should be grateful for your opinions please.

John

If the aeroscreen is all within the required limits then theres no reason for it to fail.

I would take it off to be safe. Also if things are ok at the time of test theres nothing they can do... So if all you did was take it off for the retest it will pass.

Depends on your examiner.... Some are pretty chilled about obvious post-SVA adjustments, others are control freaks and don't even want you to adjust the tyres pressures afterwards.....

Most are pretty reasonable and would act depending upon how dangerous the obvious post-SVA modifications is going to be- IE if you turned up with rotating spears coming out of the wheels a la Ben Hur then took them off for the re-test he might fail you on something else!! If it's to get round an obviously ridiculous bit of the regs then they'll likely ignore it....

At my bro's SVA test the examiner said (in relation to putting silicon sealant over the screw threads on the Landy indicator lights) "and it you put some vaseline in the recess first the plugs might even fall out on the way back from the SVA retest...."

I was just totally honest with the bloke, these guys know the score.

I ended up mounting the wing mirrors on a bit of 2 by 4 to increase the field of vision!! just for the retest.

but i guess it depends on the examiner.

Good luck

I had my aeroscreen on for the drive up. Took it off in the car park waiting for the test. He didnt see me do it (i was so early he hadnt arrived for work at that point)but did comment on the holes, he knew fine well what was on there but could only test the car on how it was presented for the test. It didnt cause any problems and he was / is quite strict.

or use bio-degradeable components ^^^

if you can be bothered, there is a rather complicated set up to determine if your screen is too high, see SVA manual.

Thank you all for your opinions and experiences. I'll take it along as it is and hear what the man has to say.

Thank you once again, John
