Which log book?

I was happily building a pinto engined Indy until I bought a Corolla GTi with a sweet sounding 4AGE engine. Now I'm not sure what route to take for SVA. I have installed the sierra engine and box from my donor but am toying with the idea of fitting the 4AGE before the SVA. If I was to fit the Toyota engine to the Ford gearbox and present it to the DVLA inspector with a Corolla log book claiming it was my donor do you think I would get away with it? The way I see it is they will check the engine number against the log book but are they going to know the gearbox and other bits didn't come from a Toyota cos there are no serial numbers on anything else so they would have to recocnise a type 9 box from sight.

What do you think?

Someone i know, built a dax rush,Rover V8, cosworth 4x4 running gear, told the DVLA inspector that all the bits came from one doner except the engine which was reconditioned (he had a standard sierra logbook,vin tag and number plates as "proof" , inspector walked round the car, remarked "oh this is nice" and issued an age related plate.

i'm in a similar quandrum about what to do. I've just stripped my sierra but have my vauxhall to go into an indy. I'm going to send the v5 back and get the engine no. changed then hope for the best i think.... (might take the spark plug cover off, which says vauxhall DOHC 16v though hehe)

Thought they ran a points system ?

The following values will be allocated to the major components used:

Points

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chassis/body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque)* (original or new) = 5
Suspension = 2
Axles = 2
Transmission = 2
Steering Assembly = 2
Engine = 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8 points or less gets you a Q reg, the engine is only 1 point !!!

any idea what they classify the suspension as, we don't use the sierra suspension, so in that scenario anyone building an indy will only get 7 points with the sierra engine. unless they count the uprights? but i would have thought they'd count as part of the axles?

looks like a 'q' regardless from where i'm standing.

Hmmm...

Just had a read through the DVLA page linked above and it says:

D. Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body/chassis/monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration document.

A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used.

If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis/bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An SVA test will be required to register the vehicle.

Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an SVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

The third paragraph being the important bit - so what comprises a major component??

OK, re-read the above page and the major components are:

Suspension (front & back)
Axles (both)
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine

Does everyone agree that category D (Kit Conversions) applies to those of us who've bought a chassis? or is it B (radically altered)?

Don't know if that helps me though!!

Suspension - still need to know what that means, but I'm guessing we can't count it.

Axels (both) is a puzzler too - can we count the front hubs as the axel? Thats 1 major component!

Steering assembly - got to be rack and column I guess (bummer, using escie rack)

Engine - transferred number from mazda donor on V5, maybe get away with it? Thats 2 major components for me??

Transmission - using mazda box too, but I would've got that from the donor as well after the successful transplant of a rotary into the Sierra wouldnt i!!

The points system isnt applied to kit cars built like a locost. You could never amass enougth points.

Having read lists like this for about 3 years, what I have gleaned is :

1. get a log book with a single donor and use as many parts as you can from it - engine gearbox, hubs rack etc. Dont worry about points.

2. KEEP ALL receipts for your chassis steel. This is to prove it is new.


Present car with above 2 points and you will get an age related plate.

If you cant prove the LOCOST chassis origins and the car looks like a mixture of parts and you cant reasonably show a single donor with a V5 has been used for most bits you get a Q.

Im sure holes can be picked in this, but number 1 point is the 8 points system does NOT apply.

In other words, Neds statement is the rule thats enforced.

Do you keep the log book even if you scrap the old chassis before geting the new vehicle tested? i need to scrap mine very shortly before i get evicted! when i've scrapped cars in the past they asked for the V5, maybe this is different cos technically i've dismantled it already?

keep the log book, you will need it as proof of single donor. a scrappy shouldn't worry about the v5, just tell them it for a kitcar etc. i think i'm being OTT, but i'm gonna take the vin and reg plates off before mine goes.

I was a bit naughty

I got the car from aution, never registered it.

The scrappy just took it away as it was.

I have a V5 in someone elses name, that will be used - I will 'scrap it' by letter and keep V5 at some point.

I took them off too- hey, you don't want someone ringing another vehicle with your numbers!

i cut mine out whilst trying to avoid buying a hoist... didnt work but conviniently i got the front panel to keep!

i'll keep the plates incase i get to reuse them! tight arse i know...!
