Mine's about your size - ok it's certainly not legal but I simply scaled down a 'real' one and Mr Plod hasn't bothered me about it yet.
If you use silly fonts or start altering numbers to look like letters etc you are just asking for trouble - I reckon you will be ok.

We've never had a plate on the front, I reckon it's easier to plead that "it must've fallen off" than explain why you have an illegal plate.

The only time plod mentioned it (was pulled for speeding) I blagged him by saying as it was under 650kgs that I didn't need one. I don't think a proper traffic cop would've been fooled tho

I have included some text from a thread on Performance Bikes magazine and whilst the information is intended for motorcycle use, it may have some bearing in the car world. this reply is to a question regarding legality of a number plate and is answered by the moderator of the legal section of the forum, himself a fireblade riding serving police officer!

"""
Not far off but it's recently changed thanks to ACPO getting an injection of common sense..

as far as number plates are concerned as long as it can be read at 20.5m then that's good enough.....

single line plates is still a no-no and letterbox size type plates as well..

quote:

(ACPO)

"Registration plates, the test to be applied, if not easily legible from 20.5 metres, prosecution and inform DVLA.

Whilst accepting that this is a technical offence, there are concerns regarding the misuse of registration plates on motorcycles.

It is well recognised that there are many technological advances in automated detection and enforcement equipment, most of which rely upon remote reading of registration plates.

It is difficult for enforcement agencies to differentiate between the individual who wishes to make a fashion statement or enhance the appearance of their machine from one who is deliberately attempting to avoid detection for criminal purposes.

It is with this rationale that it has been decided not to focus on the technicalities of the size of the plate or font size to comply with current legislation, but to apply a simple test of legibility, based upon the standard eyesight test for riders and drivers."
""""
Whilst it is for a motorcycle, I would suggest if pulled and under caution you starte that the number plate was not designed to deceive and ask him to verify "under caution" that the plate was legible at 20.5 metres.
If nothing else it'll p*ss him off and you were getting a ticket anyway,

I thought that a "non european type approved vehicle" can have small number plates at the front.
All amature built cars must meet this condition?

is it worth the risk? I put a stick-on one on the nose cone* - reason being it looks more legal than a small scale one.

* I think it enhances the look by breaking up the large red area.

p.s. beware of deliberately doing obvious things to avoid speed cameras, flip up numberplates etc. I believe they can charge you with attempting to pervert the course of justice which can get you jail time and a proper record. They probably theoretically could for the broken numberplate trick if they really wanted to face the paperwork.
