Rear View Mirror.

Another dumb SVA question!.

Is it a requirement to have a rear view mirror in the middle. I already have two wing mirrors, do i need a third.

Cheers,

The Baron

Its not a requirement but having one may help with the rear view part of the test.

I was told that it is a requirement, unless there is some obstruction that prevents its use.

AFAIK, the requirements are one on the offside, and one in the centre.

UPDATE: It IS a requirement, SVA Manual, Section 10, para 1.

"Obligatory mirrors required are, one interior mirror and one offside exterior mirror ... An interior mirror must be fitted unless it would provide NO rearward vision (eg obscured by a solid bulkhead)"

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some have passed with just wing mirrors... it's still a bit of a lottery.

Most vans are designed to carry a load (believe it or not!) so there's a high chance that an internal mirror would be useless, hence they don't fit one (but still meet the regs).

Oh, and Steve, keep your drawers on, there's ladies present!

That's because the mirror offers no rearward visibility whereas in a 7 it does

type of mirrors

I have a set of these mirrors:

and the middle one I got from the donor (plus made a mount for it)
SVA states that the mirror should be approved or have an "E" mark. I havent come across any such mirrors, could someone shed some light on this issue?

The rest of the SVA requirement says "... or meets the requirements" - in other words, the mirror must be tall enough, wide enough, and must meet the sharp edges requirements.

It must also allow the tester to see the relevant test marks when he sits in the car (poles at various positions and distances).
