Insurance and MOT
Firstly:
am I right in thinking that I can legally drive the car for an MOT before SVA test and registration, provided it has a VIN No.
Secondly:
who would insure the car for this purpose?
This might serve as my test drive, shine the brakes up, bed them in a little etc.

I don't think it is.
I looked into this prior to SVA. There is no requirement to MOT the car before your SVA so you have no justification in taking it for one.
You can drive to SVA though.
My insurance is with Graham Sykes. Most specialist insurers [Adrian Flux, Sureterm, etc.] will insure on a chassis number.
Most have a limited period you can be insured for though. With mine I had 14 days from the date of taking out the policy to pass the SVA and get the
car registered.

Footman James will insure it for 30 days on the VIN, but will also extend that beyond 30 days if necessary, I guess there will be a max number of days
extension though.

Adrian FLux £25 per day
you can drive to and from SVA
and to and from a destination to have work carried out on the car pre booked
PS you do not want a proper MOT where they enter details into the computer of your car

Whether an MOT is or isn't a requirement before SVA depends on which dollop you speak to @ the DVLA.... The official line is that you
don't require an MOT but most DVLA officers are so used to demanding an MOT for registration they do it automatically...
The MOT testing centers are set-up to test cars based on VIN numbers, and insurers will cover you for driving to an MOT before SVA....
But the problem still arises that if you MOT it before SVA you may get onto the DVLA computer as requiring MOTs annually... meaning they might start
asking for one every year rather than after 3 years....
So yes you can drive to an MOT but do you really want to
