Turbo ecotech

Hello, My mum has a turbo 4x4 cav GSI. 96000 Miles. There is a what i think is a lack of fuel in 2nd gear at 5000 RPM the car stutters but then corrects its self. I think a new fuel pump? Does it have a filter? i havn't found 1 yet. Any ideas? plus it pops when u let off. Its not loud bang or anything just i pop any ideas? It is in my interest because i want the car/engine when it starts becoming unreliable. Plus if i say its wants a new cam and she pays for it i wont have to when i get the car/engine.

Air getting into the intake/exhaust manifolds would cause this. But basically no idea other than that...

mass air flow meter is a common one on ecotec's and i know also the O2 on the Z series (not sure if its a common problem on the C series) but the mass air flow is a deffo a cause of flat spots.
