cheap light and basic
had a wee idea to cut the cost of going to and from work, a motorbike would be the ideal solution but a)never been on one and b) cant cos of medical
probs atm..
so was thinking of building something bare minimum with a wee 1300 or something that aint heavy on the juice.
and was wondering
What is the bare minimum of accessories needed for the sva??
obviously i can ditch windscreen and go in a helmet and wetsuit if needed but do you need things like a dash board can you just mount the clock of the
coloumn???
do you need side panels or have plastic instead of steel floor etc etc???
or what other "luxuries" can you skip??
and on a side note how does the tax thing work if your on a q plate is a 1300cc still cheap tax or do you gotta pay gordies full wack??
thanks
iain

Why go as large at 1300?
Use the 1.0 Fiesta engine! It's what Trueblue is using in his!
Cheers,

you say about motorbikes, i kind of think they're a false economy sometimes, because the engines spin twice as fast, the consumption's
about the same

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

For small and cheap transport for work I'd buy a second hand Nova, to be honest.
I think you will have trouble getting a locost insured as your main driver in NI - certainly I've always got my insurance only on condition it
was my second car and limited mileage. Ring around though, this isn't something I have dived into too deep.
You can't really leave a se7en alone with much confidence. I've had to chase drunks who climbed into mine and sat making vroom vroom
noises. Folks will place kids on the bonnet to take pictures etc etc. They aren't
out to cause damage, but fibreglass isn't tough...
I do use mine to nip in and out of work, but to be honest when it's wet it's nice to take a tintop, with a radio and a heater.
Also the SVA in NI is devilish. My first SVA took 9 hours, and was not a bundle of laughs. From what I've heard it has gotten a bit easier as
more testers have become SVA certified, but it's still offputting.
I would of course recommend you build a se7en as your second / fun car.
Tax on the Indy Bladde is Private / Light goods and comes to about 100 quid. Roughly. Insuranceis 240 for 1500 miles PA.
All the best

What about one of this buggies that use the Fiat 600 Engine. or the ones that use the mini / metro engine.?
There are more options other than a Se7en, especially if you want to commute.
Plenty of cheap small cars about. I would start loking from an insurance angle first.
1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

The reliant 848cc engine and gearbox is very light. True, 39 BHP isn't much but they are very easily tuned. They're also quite compact.

As said above - i dont see building a car as the solution to providing a cheap way of getting to work. Spending potentially thousands even on a basic
build to fit i tiny engine just makes little sense to me to be honest. Stick with a 1L car for a few hundred quid, with dirt cheap road tax and good
fuel economy and keep the kit car for fun days.

Great British Sports Cars (Robin Hood) have launched a three wheeler powered by a moped engine. its easily upgradeable to take an engine up to 500cc.
might be a useful alternative, and the comp[rehensive kit looiked very cheap.

Mine only did 55 MPG and I drove it quite gently.

I saw the prototype at stoneleigh. It had a 50cc engine and they say it will suit engines upto a fireblade, which is probably the biggest range of
engines of any car. The final version will be shown at Newark. If I'd known, I probably wouldn't have started my own 3 wheel scooter
engined project.

my thinking wasnt actually to have it as a main driver, just as a way to get too and from work which although not much milage is where most of the
fuel goes in the in the family wagon and the way the price of veggie oil is goin its becoming an expense hobby work is
the idea would to be build something very basic its not a long journey, very light and as economical as possible and in theory pay for itself??
The 1300cc would be the upper limit no point building something fast as the traffic dont allow it.
my basic idea at the minute is to try and find a small car mot failure or accident damaged. Dont laugh but thinking something like hyundai atoz came
into my as i've noticed quite a few in scrappies round here and tend to be cheap or try luck in free ads see what turns up.
just stick engine into back of a frame use as much as possible of donor!
My only real worry apart from the maths to see if this project will workout, is as allistar says the sva round here. I've heard a few stories
about it being a bit ott but sure it'll be experiance for the proper car

What about a Q pod?
Two seats, no roof, and road legal.
