x flow cooling problem solved???

Posted a few weeks ago about overheating and coolant loss on my 1300 x flow engine. In desperation removed head to check all was OK. Also discovered I had a 15 lb pressure cap fitted to header tank instead of 13 lb. Drilled a 3mm hole in the base plate of the thermostat as recommended. However, on removing the water pump I discovered a major problem. Underneath the impellar where the vanes face an angled face on the pump body, almost 3/4 of the facing had been eaten away considerably with corrosion. It looked very like a piece of cheese that had been nibbled by a mouse. (best way to describe it) Talking to an ex diesel engine development engineer, he said his company had done some research on types and strength of anti-freeze on alloys. He said that the conclusion was that the type and also too strong a mix had drastic effects on alloys where the mixture literally bored its way THROUGH alloy like a worm. Could this have caused my pump problem? Anyway, with mods I have run engine up to temp, fan cut in twice, header tank level stayed rock solid. One happy Locoster. Just need to finish it and SVA now.

I know some old engines don't like using modern "yellow" anti-freezes but I expect that's not a problem with aliminium as modern engines probably have more alloy bits than old lumps of pig iron....
