Road fund licence (tax disc)
What's the situation about taxing the car?
My thought is; it was built in 2008, therefore should use the current emissions rating. However the original was pre 2001 and thus use the engine
capacity system.
Which one is it?

I am fairly sure it goes on the emissions from the original engine build date (or as printed on your V5)
Mine is a 1991 engine so I get 1991 raod tax class (car finished in 2007)
hope that helps!

Cool, was wondering if it'd go through some rigourous emissions test for the tax purposes

You will have to meet the emissions standard from the the year the engine was produced (and you will have to prove the age of the engine for this
purpose - I failed my first SVA as I couldn't prove engine age)

There is no replacement for displacement...

Isn't that on the engine number? I get the feeling I should make a list of bits to keep because someone else needs to know about them
