Hi,

I was wondering whats the ideal sierra (4x4 or 2WD)rear hub, shaft and diff for a roadster.....

don't quote me but didn't the xr4 2wd have lsd where as the 4x4 had traction control ?

might be wrong though so best check with someone that knows better.

Well the 4X4 that I used as a donor was a 3.62 LSD. To my knowledge I dont believe that Sierra's ever had traction control.

Xr4i (2wd) had an open diff

Xr4x4 had LSD at rear

Rear hub carriers are the same only differenc is drum or disc as the disc hubs have caliper mounts.
Early Sierra Thiner shafts push fit drum brakes
Desiel push fit shafts thicker same as lobro
Later bolt on shafts disc brakes 100mm Lobro
Cosworth shafts bolt on 108mm lobro
Most LSD are 3.6 7" on Sierra only found on 4x4
Cosworth 3.64 71/2" Saphire had 7"
Rarer 2.0L DOHC 4x4 had a 7" 3.9 LSD

I have the chance of a sierra 4x4 for a diner car....

just to make it clear:
some XR4's had an LSD, but only the 4x4's and cossie's had them as standard

the 2wd cossie's had a 3.64 7.5" LSD with 108mm lobro's (bolt-on CV's)

the 2wd cossie's hubs and driveshafts are different aswell (just a little bigger) but they use the same solid disc type brake calipers as the normal sierra's but spaced out further to use bigger 273mm discs (std. sierra ones are 253mm)

the 4x4 cossie's (inc escorts) had a 3.62 7" LSD with 100mm lobro's the same as V6 4x4's (the 2.0 XR4x4 has a 3.92 LSD)

the 4x4 cossie's diff and driveshafts are the same as the normal 4x4, but the hub carriers have longer mountings for the brake calipers and use larger diamiter vented discs

the granada/scorpio 24v cossie's had 3.64 7.5" LSD (unless it had traction control) with the smaller 100mm bolt on CV's and the same brakes as the 4x4 cossie

so you can mix and match to a certain extent

I had two xr4's through my hands, both had 7 1/2" lsd's. One was a C reg 2.8, the other a J 2.9. Still got one of the diffs.

^^^ sounds right to me, some of the xr4's had them, just not all of them... and some had 7" and some had 7.5"

I recon ford just uesd whatever was in the parts bin if they ran out of the right ones - some folk have even found later xr4x4's with 7.5" 3.64 diffs in the back (but still the 3.62 in the front) - I bet that didn't help there centre diffs much
