What's the widest tyre I can run?
lewis - 20/2/12 at 08:37 PM

I'm looking to change all 4 tyres for some decent rubber 888s probaly currently fitted I have 185/60/14 on a 7" rim how wide can I go or am I about there?

7" wide rim? You can easily go to 205 tyres.

I would stick with narrower on the front and 205's on the back from personal experience.

lewis - 20/2/12 at 08:46 PM

Well I stuck a tape measure through the rim and measured to outer & inner rim edge is this right? If so 7" is what I got.

you could go wider still but up to you really. 205/60/13 will go on a 6" rim so you should be fine with a 205 on a 7" rim

More or less yep. Its normally cast into the back of the wheel as well too.

But either way 205 would be fine

Nice one thanks, next question anywhere got offers on 888s at the moment?

i have a friend who likes really wide tyres as a styling thing, me i have reduced the size of my tyres from 205 rears and 185 fronts to 185 rears and 175 fronts there was a dramatic improvement in wet weather grip and some improvement in dry grip......you can easily over tyre a car as light as ours and unless you have monster power to warm up the tyres. you might be buying expensive experiment in dodgy handling.

According to the Toyo website you can put 225/50/R14 R888s onto 14x6J - 14x8J tyres. So they'll handle 225s easily.

205 would be enough although I would stick with 185 unless you are running 180+BHP

steve m - 20/2/12 at 10:13 PM

I have 205/55/13 on all corners, and handling is not very good, as they are to wide

Im planning on 185 fronts 195 backs

Thanks for the inputs guys.

ive got 195s all round on 15" rims, handling couldnt really be better

Interesting topic, I am well off needing tyres yet, however just wondering what peoples opinion was to 15" wheels and tyre sizes?

I am running 220BHP as standard and hope to get a little bit more one rebuilt. I like the 888's and heard good things about them. With that sort of power would 225's on the back be needed or would a 205 or 215 be adequate?

By the way, not tempted to go smaller than a 15's as my brakes only just fit the 15" wheel and if i go smaller the electronic speedo is going to be miles out, probably going to have trouble with that running 15's TBH.

Does any one know how these wider tyres may affect my handling?

What are the play off's with the power range and grip I have mentioned and the handling problems some of you have mentioned? I am getting the vibe that smaller is better?

My car is Mid-Engined by the way.

I had toyo r1r's in 225 and ran 330bhp through them, amazing grip. I'd go for them over r888's if you can get them in your size.

rodgling - 21/2/12 at 01:06 PM

I *think* R1Rs are the same rubber as R888s, just with a more rain-friendly tread pattern. So which one you go for basically comes down to if you intend to drive in the wet at all.

I'm currently running 330 bhp through T1Rs (225) which is entertaining but not enough grip. Previously I had about 220 through the same tyres, with much the same result.

I don't seem to be able to find r1r's in my size so think they start at 15s
