Could these drive shafts be made???
franky - 29/4/12 at 05:44 PM

Hi all...

If I wanted to use a subaru diff and nissan hubs could I get a set of custom dirveshafts made that go from subaru diff to the nissan hub? The datsun ones are old UJ's, I was hoping that if I got a set of driveshafts for my diff I could get them altered to suit so i'd end up with modern CV joints...

Who would you ask about it? how much would I pay? is it possible?

Cheers.

Anything can be made!

Take your bits and ask any local machine shop.

Maybe a welded sleeve to join the shafts?

Sure can. We had a om made for a Escort RS turbo using the mondeo gearbox so one end was Mondeo and the other for the Escort. A guy local to us made them out of a high grade steel £20 od quid per foot. We told him how lon it needed to be and took him the old shafts as a pattern for the splines. I think the total cost was £250 for a pair of shafts the cv joints where re used

A lot of the autograss boys get them made here:

don't sleeve them, get them made one piece.

Stupid question time......

Berrisford said yes no problem, they only make shafts though(£320 a pair).

How is a driveshaft constructed if they can only supply a solid shaft? Where can I get shafts built with CV joints or can I build them into unversal cv joints? I'm a little confused!

^^ depends on the type of CV joint

the lobro ones use plain shafts with a spline on each end and the CV's are held on with circlips - these are the ones that you get on sierra's with rear discs and some BMW's aswell as loads of other makes/models
but they need a flange to bolt onto at each end

^ wot he said, I have made hybrid driveshafts with volvo 850 inners and xr 4x4 outers. They are sleeved and welded at the moment for mockup but I intend to have them made in one piece. I have been involved with a sleeved shaft that failed.

these particular shafts are splined and are retained by circlips

Where i'm struggling is the output flanges, they're part of the driveshaft so it looks like I can't do it.

A company in the states makes these

which means I can just fit my standard driveshafts, with new UJ's I guess.
