
I am currently having a bit of mountain fun in my Fury , and prior to setting off I rebuilt the front brakes - re-conditioned callipers , skimmed the
discs and fitted new green stuff pads .
The brakes are the best they have ever been , but for one thing - I am getting vibration through the steering wheel , the harder I brake the worse it
gets .
And if I brake to a stand still , it feels as if the wheels are square ? The wheel rocks left and right , and the whole front end shakes .
Any ideas ?
Have you trapped any dirt/debris between disk and mounting surface? It does not take much to produce the symptoms you have described. You should also check the disc run out with a dial gauge, but I am sure you did that after the disc skim.
My doblo feels the same, I'm guessing the discs are warped/running out as the superhero suggested.

99 times out of a hundred it's dirt/rust between the disc and hub flange. If I remember correctly you have Cortina hubs(?) Take your hubs off and
split the hubs/discs. Clean the mating surfaces with emery and rebuild... Assuming your machining was true. Bit of a pain to do but better than brake
problems in the mountains.
Warped discs are actually very rare, but the act of fitting new discs in the mistaken belief they're warped, also results in getting rid of the
rust/dirt and cures it.
Used to be a major problem on 1970s Fords , it caused a lot of tail chasing changing discs and suspension bushes the cure was found when Ford introduced Girling brake pads with a thin layer of abrasive on the friction surface.
been there done it got the t shirt. have skimmed discs plenty of times some good some bad results from experience i woud say stick new discs on it.
bt green stuff pads come with a bed in compound on them so i doubt its that although it was a good call.
How good a job did you make of skimming the discs? Did you manage to do both sides without turning the disc in the chuck? Did you check thickness
with a mic at a few places when done?
I recently did my van discs in a bit of a hurry and although I thought I had made a good job of trueing them up in the chuck I obviously didn't.
Howver I've done a few thousand miles now and they are definately wearing back to a more even thickness

The discs where true to within a thou all over - bit I'm wondering if the hub may be slightly out (I had to put I'm an insert for the
bearing after it spun) .
I have put a couple of clicks on the front campers , and this has helped a lot - I still.feel something through the wheel , bit nowhere near as bad ,
with the added bonus of improved turn-in on the brakes .
Which is good when hurtling into second gear hairpin with the front types squealing !
With Cortinas and Capris it was more a disc surface problem than run out. The abrasive pads gave the disc a really good "scratching
up".
The fact you are not feeling through the brake pedal is pretty conclusive confirmation it isn't run out. With M16 calipers any run out will
be felt through the pedal, much morse sone than with Sierra style floating calipers.
That's what I was thinking - no matter how bad the vibration gets , the pedal feel is fine . At its worst its almost like chatter , as if the
wheels are bouncing up and down - sort of confirmed by a couple of clicks on the shocks .
I don't think its wishbone bushes as it went through an mot only last week , but then the bushes are 12 years old , and the car has done
somewhere around 40000 miles......maybe more !
