I have just bought a Locost kit car thats a couple of years old. I dont know too much about it to be honest. What i do know is its got a few problems!

One of the minor ones is after it was parked in my garage over night (about 15hrs in total) there was a patch of oil on the inside of the rear passenger side wheel. I took off the wheel it was all on the inside of the rim and on the brake discs.

It does not look like brake fluid as is darker and thicker.

All I know is the car has a mk2 Escort rear axle.

Any ideas what it could be?

if it is a live axle it sounds like either the hub seal has gone or the axle was over filled with oil,...

pop the plug out of the diff to see if it is over full, I am sure that some one will be along in a bit to describe how to change out the seal... as mine is IRS I've never had to do it.

sounds like seal in bearing on half shaft has failed

Does it smell sulphury?? If so diff oil and a bearing seal. Needes a new bearing I'm afraid. Not to bad a job to do though.

Yeah first port of call before stripping anything off is to check the oil level is not to high and the axle breather vent is clear.

Oil level should be checked when the car is absolutely level, oil level should be level or just below (ie about 3mm) the level plug.

Anyone know of a guide how to change the oil seal and a supplier for the parts?

Cant get the level plug out as i dont have a square socket for it. I will have to get one!

just use a ratchet or breaker bar for the level plug,it,s 3/8 square
as for changing the oil seal,it,s part of the bearing,not too hard to do if you have or can borrow,a slide hammer,angry grinder,mahoosive hammer,vice,assorted chisels and drifts
