Which drum brakes??!?!

Hi all,

Wanting to replace the drums on my rear axel as part of the rebuild. I think it's a mk 2 escort rear axel and have ordered what I thought are the appropriate drums and shoes. Those being 204mm. However having offered them up try arnt clearing the brake cylinder and are clearly to small.

I would measure the old ones, but stupidly through them away!!!

Any ideas what size they would be?

i've got an english axle running 9" drums. Sounds like you need the same. I think mine was off a cortina or capri, not sure.

The two drum brake diameter sizes are 8" and 9" only the 1600 and 2000cc engined Escorts had 9" drums but there were also different types of 8" and 9" drums on the Escort and other Ford models.

The first thing you need to do is measure the diameter of the back plates, the second thing is to take a picture of the bits you have and post them on the forum.

Based on the mk1 Escort brake sitting on my bench, an 8" back plate will measure about 250mm (almost 10" across the outer edges,
So I would guess 9" backplate eould measure almost 11".

For the rest of us there is a lesson it is a good idea to photograph drum brake assembles and marking the positions of the springs on the old shoes before stripping and don't throw out anything until you get it all back together.

Thanks for the help gents!

Trident; the backing plate is indeed almost 11". I'm going back to the motor factors now to get some 9".

Lesson learnt and pictures will be taken from now on!
