Where to source custom hardened pins?
cloudy - 6/11/12 at 12:04 AM

Am repairing a quaife diff, and need to replace 8 pins approx 6mm diameter 30mm length, but they need to be hardened steel - any ideas where I might find such a thing?

quaife?

How about dowels?......of course they would need to be a standard size like 6mm or 1/4"

They will be hardened to a specific Rockwell hardness I suspect,

Dowel pins aren't always hard, especially RS ones. Unless it specifically says they are. RS are good but can be pretty basic when it comes to these things. I can harden 416 stainless if needed in a vacuum hardening machine at work. We may even have 6mm bar but I don't know what tolerance it is. I'd have to check what Rockwell reading bits too though.

Agreed dowel pins in general aren't always hard...but hardened dowel pins always are... Those are usually made from a tough steel then case hardened and precision ground to a very close tolerance.

I was just pointing out that a dowel may be soft and not necessarily hard that all.

Just checked up - it seems RS ones under 4mm are 'soft' and 4mm+ are case hardened. I newver realised that!

I know, and it was a good point.........it was just a tongue in cheek response by me......
