Alloy wheel refurb, is it worth it???
AndyW - 27/3/13 at 09:44 PM

Good evening

My car is all but finished with the exception of the wheels. I am currently using a used set of wolf race alloys, which I got all four for £40. Now the tread is ok ish on the tyres but I would put new rubber on, but is it worth having these refurburbished or just bite the bullet and buy a new set. They have been curbed, and all four have one section where you can see the rim is slightly out of shape. I heard that they can be put in a press type thing and pushed back into shape. Anyone any experience of this? Is there any one who refurbs wheels who could have a look at some pics and say if its worth it?

This is pretty much my last hurdle before I apply for IVA....

Please let me know.

Thanks

Andy

If they're not straight to start with they'll probably be hard to balance without big chunks of weights attached. If they need refurbing as well, I'be inclined to put your money into a new set and finish the car of nicely.

£40 each for a refurb?

I would stick them on ebay and buy some lovely new ones

There is a respected wheel rebuilder / refinisher local to me. Their work is impeccable... truly!
Once refurbished one's damaged, pieces missing even wheel(s) are returned in 100% 'as new' condition complete with warrantee.
Problem is the cost is only barely below that of a brand new wheel :-)
Only practical to have this done..if ...one has unique and irreplaceable wheels.

AS above, only worth doing on a quality wheel. The sums don't add up on cheap rims.

I had one refurbed on my tintop, a chunk was missing and it was quite badly twisted. It cost me £70, but they fixed it so well that it now only needs a 5 gram weight to balance the valve. Absolutely fantastic job....

However, after I'd got it sorted, I checked on Ebay and could have got a mint condition used one for £50, with a tyre! Obviously there is a danger that it had some invisible damage, but I wish I had checked before getting the wheel done.

OK Thanks for the replies.

So here is the next question, where is the best place for a set of 4 15" wheels to fit sierra hubs. Dont want anything flash just a nice alloy wheel with tyres.

If its any use, a mate has 4 of these ( could be 5 thinking about it) i had them on my car before I did a swap for
some 13" 's. No clue as to how much he would want but if you are interested I will find out for you. The centre caps wre not fitted when I took this picture years ago, but they do have caps.
