I'm trying to identify the brakes on my axle
- single piston sliding cylinder with wheel adjuster on the other end, unknown condition and vintage. Q can I get replacements for these, if not can it be altered to accept double piston cylinders?
what shoes will fit?

If it is an english axle, it probably came from an Escort or Cortina (dont know which), you may have to measure its width.

You can get all the brake components for those axles still AFAIK. You just need to know what car it came from.

If its escort then its probably early escort.

I have a 78 mk2 escort with fixed cylinder and 2 pistons.

If you can't get replacements then new (second hand) brake back plates should do the trick for converting from one type to the other.
I may be wrong but if its an english axle then the bolts size/spacing for mounting the back plates to the axle.

Is the adjuster a self adjuster on the end of the wheel cylinder or a manual adjuster on the opposite end of the brake shoes.

If it is a manual adjuster its is Mk1 Escort with 8" drum the wheel cylinders shoould be 0.7" dia same as fitted to most british cars of the period --- Triumph Herald, Via some Mk1/Mk2 1300 Cortinas, 1300 Marina and some Mk1 Capri, Hillman Imp was also similar.

If it is a self adjuster it is the same as the Cortina Mk2 1600 (with discs front) and Marina 1.8.
