Master Cylinders...again
Jeffers_S13 - 6/5/05 at 10:47 AM

After trawling through old posts, I cant find a definitive answer to suit my question although I bet someone else will...

My car came with two master cylinders, 5/8" and 3/4" with a balance bar set-up.

I have M16 Cortina calipers on the front and 9" drums on a live axle at the back.

Im going to use the 3/4" cylinder for the rears and the 5/8" for the fronts.

Will this be suitable ? i.e. will the fronts lock just before the rears ? if the balance bar were set to a neutral position ?

(fine adjustment allowing me to get it so the fronts lock up 'just' before the rears)

Thanks

James

The 5/8 will generate more pressure than the 3/4 for a given force acting on the MC from the break pedal, so in theory the end connected to the 5/8 will lock up first.

Bear in mind this depends a lot on drums/liners/wheel cylinders on the rear and disc/pads/calipers on the front.

Normally balance bar system use small bore master cylnders 5/8 " and/or 0.7" -- your 0.75" cylinder is on slightly on the big side
Try the 5/8" on front 3/4" on the rear it should be ok but you may have to screw th balance a bit towars the rear if its very far off centre think about changing it for a 0.7,
