stiff diff (oh sir)

i had the back off my dif and gave it a steam clean a few months back, dusted it off and positioned it in my chassis, but i can't get it to turn (by hand) it hasn't had any oil in it, but i didn't think it would do it any damage as it's been sat indoors since!

is it likely that it just needs a bit of leverage to turn it and loosen it up and some oil aswell?!

I can't believe its rusted internally, its just a 3.92 open dif 7" sierra jobbie..

It sounds like you steam cleaned the inside of the diff, is that right?
Did you dry it thoroughly?
IT it was steam cleaned and then left then it may have rusted inside.

Sure you didn't accidentally angle grind through the CWP or anything?

Is it push in shafts or the lobro type?

My push in shafts didnt rotate properly if they werent pushed in far enough - try that maybe?

my 7" lsd does exactly the same, even though it has oil in it. When they have stood for a while the bearings seem to take a slight set or something, anyway there seems to be some "stiction" to overcome to start it moving and then it's fine again.

Try turning the pinion flange (if you were trying to turn the output flanges) as on mine the output flanges can be almost impossible to turn after a month of standing. The pinion flange usually turns pretty easily after it initially frees up.

thanks for the replies, will try putting some leverage on the prop flange to free it up...

yes i did grind through the back plate, hence steam cleaning it to get all the cr@p out of it
